CMS Women's Soccer Falls on the Road to No. 10 WashU in Heavy Rain

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team dropped its first game of the young season when it fell 3-0 on the road to preseason No. 10 Washington (Mo.) on Friday evening in a driving rainstorm.

With the loss, the Athenas fall to 2-1, after starting the year with a 6-0 road win at Soka and a 2-1 overtime win at La Verne on Wednesday. WashU, which finished last year with a 17-2-1 record, improves to 3-0 with the win. 

The game was moved up two hours due to the bad weather to a 5 p.m. (Central) start, and then kicked off 15 minutes early to try to beat the worst of the rain. A lightning delay also slowed down the start of the second half for over 15 minutes. 

WashU got all the scoring it would need in the 11th minute, when Hannah Menard blasted a shot from 40 yards out that hit off the crossbar and went in. The Athenas kept the score 1-0 going into intermission, with junior Sarah Tocher, junior Rhiann Holman and sophomore Isabel  Streiffer each taking shots to attempt to tie it up, but each was unable to find the target. 

A minute after junior Kira Favakeh took a shot on one end for CMS, the Bears got an insurance goal at the 59:30 mark as Taylor Cohen deflected in a cross to make the score 2-0. Jesse Rubin added the final goal for WashU with 14:27 left on a left-footed blast from just outside the box. 

Sophomore goalie Claire Hamson performed well to keep the Athenas in striking distance for most of the game, finishing with nine saves. The Bears held a 17-4 edge in overall shots and a 12-0 advantage in shots on target.

CMS will be right back in action tomorrow for its third game in four days when it takes on Fontbonne for a 7 p.m. contest in Saint Louis.
