Too Clouse For Comfort, Athenas Run Away Late

PASADENA, Calif. – Playing the second game in a back-to-back, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team defeated the Caltech Beavers 5-2. Gabrielle Clouse (CMC) connected for a pair of goals to lead four different scorers on the afternoon. The two goals for Clouse were her first two scores this season.

The Athenas scored two first-half goals from Clouse to take a 2-0 lead at the break. Kira Favakeh (HMC) assisted the first goal in the 11th minute before Clouse connected on an unassisted tally in the 22nd minute. The Beavers then countered with a pair of goals early in the second-half to tie the match at 2-2 in the 52nd minute.

In the 64th minute, Rhiann Holman (CMC) found Sarah Tocher (CMC), who broke the tie and gave the Athenas the 3-2 lead on her first goal of the season.

Insurance goals from Noelle Kim (SC) and Aarthi Namasivayam (HMC) in the 75th and 78th minutes put the match away and gave the Athenas the 5-2 victory. The goal for Kim was the first of her career, while Namasivayam's was her second of the season for the freshman.

In the match, CMS outshot the Beavers 20-9 and gained seven corner kicks while allowing none for Caltech.

Claire Hamson (CMC) made four saves in goal to give the Athenas their first win in their last six games. In their previous five games, CMS was 0-1-4.

With a brace in the match, Gabrielle Clouse earned her first career multi-goal game.

The Athenas have two games remaining in the season and are still alive in the SCIAC playoff picture. CMS needs a pair of victories against Whittier on Wednesday and Redlands on Saturday to have a chance to make the four-team playoff. Both games will be played on Pritzlaff Field at 7:00 p.m.
