Sixth Street Rivalry Ends in Scoreless Draw

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Wednesday night featured the second installment of the women's soccer Sixth Street rivalry game. The Sagehens from Pomona-Pitzer took the short walk across the street to square off with the Athenas in a match that would end in a 0-0 draw after 110 minutes.

The Athenas held a 20-8 advantage in shots on the night but were unable to find the back of the twine with any of their six shots on goal. In goal, Claire Hamson (CMC) turned away all four shots on target that she faced from the Sagehens for her fourth shutout in the last six matches.

Megan Lo (CMC) attempted a match-high four shots, while Gabrielle Clouse (CMC) and Rhiann Holman (CMC) accounted for three shots each.

The 0-0 draw is the second in as many games for the Athenas. The CMS defense has not conceded a goal in their last 237 minutes.

The Athenas held a majority of posession throughout the match. So much so, that CMS did not allow the Sagehens to attempt a shot in the first-half. At the break the Athenas held a 10-0 advantage in shots, but the scoreboard still showed zeros. The most dangerous chances in the first-half came when Sarah Malott (CMC) put two shots on frame in the 20th and 21st minutes and then later in the half when Veronica Crow (SC) ripped a shot from distance. All three CMS shots on goal in the half were turned away by the Sagehens' keeper.

Pomona-Pitzer registered their first shot of the match in the 51st minute when Abby Onderwyzer Gold put an attempt on goal. Claire Hamson caught the shot for one of her three saves in the half. Hamson also had to make saves in the 68th and 72nd minutes to preserve the 0-0 score.

CMS put two shots on goal in the second-half with their best opportunity coming in the 60th minute when Sarah Tocher (CMC) broke free on a run down the right-side. The Pomona-Pitzer goalie, Isa Berardo, came off her line and Tocher attempted to slot a shot under Berardo's right arm. Berardo got down and saved the shot to turn Tocher, and the Athenas, away.

In the first overtime, CMS had a pair of shots by Kira Favakeh (HMC) and Gabrielle Clouse (CMC) blocked before they had a chance to test the keeper. Favakeh and Close's attempts were the only shots in the first overtime for either team. In the second overtime period, Rhiann Holman (CMC) had a look at the goal in the 107th minute, but her shot was turned away. Claire Hamson was called on to make a final save in the 109th minute, but she handled the shot from distance without any issue to close out the second-straight 0-0 draw for the Athenas.

With the draw the Athenas move to 4-5-3 overall and 3-3-3 in the SCIAC. CMS will next take the field on Saturday when they travel to Cal Lutheran to take on the Regals at 7:00 p.m.
