Loggers Cut Down Athenas With Pair of Goals

CLAREMONT, Calif. – On a hot and steamy Sunday morning, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team took the pitch against the University of Puget Sound in their second match of the opening weekend. The Loggers scored a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 victory over the Athenas.

The loss drops the Athenas to 0-2-0 on the young season and improves Puget Sound to 1-1-0.

The Loggers found their first goal early in the first-half. In the 13th minute, Tayla MacPherson took a pass from Tess Peppis at the top of the box and put a shot through to open the scoring. MacPherson's goal gave the Loggers a 1-0 less than 13 minutes into the game.

Both sides had chances throughout the rest of the opening half. The Athenas took a total of six shots before the break and registered four corner kicks, but were unable to find the back of the net and the Loggers held a 1-0 lead through half-time.

The Loggers doubled their lead, scoring at nearly the exact same moment in the second-half as they did in the first-half. In the 58th minute Laura Morton took a slotted pass from the midfield and made a run along the left side of the box. She took a shot that goalie Claire Hamson (CMC) initially saved but the deflection went right to Gabbie Berg on the back post for the tap in and the 2-0 Puget Sound lead.

After the Loggers took the two-goal lead the Athenas ramped up the pressure. Over the final 30 minutes, the Athenas outshot Puget Sound 6-2 but could not find the elusive tally. One of the most dangerous chances for CMS came off the foot of Megan Lo (CMC) in the 86th minute. Lo wound up from 25 yards out on the left side and send a high arcing shot towards the back post. The shot looked destined for the back of the net, but a diving save by Jamie Lange turned the attempt away and tipped the ball over the crossbar.

Lo finished the game with three shots, two on frame including her rip in the 86th minute. Rhiann Holman (CMC) and Sydney Smith (CMC) also took three shots each while Sarah Malott (CMC) recorded two shots of her own to lead the Athenas' offensive effort.

Claire Hamson made a pair of saves and Hayden Craig (SC) turned one shot away while splitting time in goal.

As mentioned the loss drops the Athenas to 0-2-0 on the season and CMS will next take the pitch on Sunday when they host UC Santa Cruz. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
