Athenas emerge on top in 4-3 goalfest

ORANGE, Calif. – Four different Athenas scored for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team (14-5-1, 11-2-1) on Saturday afternoon, closing out the regular season in a nail-biting 4-3 victory over Chapman University (9-8-1, 6-7-1). All four classes were represented on the scoresheet as senior Katelyn Faust (CMC), junior Wren Osler (CMC), sophomore Remi Edwards (CMC), and freshman Rhiann Holman (CMC) found the back of the net. Faust's goal extends her career-high record of eight total goals this season as she ties for the team lead with her classmate Laynee Laube (CMC).  Chapman's Rachel Lustig notched a brace and Taryn Silverglate scored one thanks to an assist from Julia Diaz.

Holman opened up the scoresheet in the 15^th minute with her first goal of her career. The freshman got in the box and took a shot that bounced off the keeper's hands. Holman pounced on the rebound and slotted the ball into the net to give CMS the lead. Four minutes later, Edwards doubled the lead off a high kick on the ball.

In the 24^th minute, Faust did all but lock the game away when she scored off a hard-shot from the right side of the box and past the keeper's hands to give CMS the 3-0 advantage. However, the Panthers refused to go away.

In the closing minutes of the half, Lustig tapped in a low cross from Kourtney Kingsmore to cut the lead to two. Later in the 80^th minute, Silvergate scored off a pass from Diaz to bring the game within one.

The Athenas stopped the bleeding in the 84th minute when Osler launched an incredible free kick from 35 yards out that sailed right above the keeper's head and into the back of the net. A minute later, Lustig rebounded her blocked shot and scored, but it was too late for the Panthers to spark another comeback.

The Athenas will open up their SCIAC tournament run at home against #3 Cal Lutheran (12-4-4, 6-4-4) on Wednesday, Nov. 2. CMS won their first meeting 1-0 and tied 0-0 in their following clash. Despite the loss, #4 Chapman has secured a spot in the SCIAC semifinals where they will face conference winner #1 Pomona-Pitzer on the same date. The winner of each match will meet in the tournament final at the site of the highest seed remaining on Saturday, Nov. 5, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
