Edwards nabs goal and assist to seal 2-1 victory over Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team secured home field advantage in the SCIAC semifinals after winning 2-1 against the University of Redlands (3-11-1, 2-9-1) thanks to goals from sophomores Remi Edwards (CMC) and Megan Lo (CMC). Before the game, both teams took time to honor their graduating seniors. Head Coach Keri Sanchez congratulated seniors Katelyn Faust (CMC), Kelly McConnell (HMC), Emily Cassell (CMC), Laynee Laube (CMC), Amy Johnson (CMC) and Makella Brems (CMC) for their contributions to the women's soccer program on and off the pitch. The Athenas (12-5-1, 9-2-1) controlled possession for most of the match, outshooting the Bulldogs 19 to 7. The Bulldogs looked stifled on the offensive end, but Lauren Bay managed to pull one back for the visitor to keep them in the game.

The Athenas threatened from the start of the whistle, stringing passes through the Redlands defense to create scoring chances in the box. In the 13^th minute, sophomore Sydney Talmi (CMC) had plenty of space from outside the top of the box to deliver a curling pass to Laube. Laube managed to get her foot on the ball, but her attempt went wide right.

In the 31^st minute, junior Margaret Loncki (CMC) managed to control an air ball with her head and dribble into the box; however, her attempt lacked force and came straight to the keeper's hands.

Five minutes later, freshman Gabrielle Clouse (CMC) delivered a well-timed short pass to Edwards inside the box. The winger drilled a shot past the keeper's fingers and into the net to give CMS the 1-0 lead.

In the 42^nd minute, Edwards slipped a pass to Lo who was racing towards the edge of the box. The speedy sophomore launched a rocket from outside the box and the keeper had no chance as CMS doubled the score.

CMS did not slow down in the second half as they continued to press on the offensive end. In the 66^th minute, Lo almost notched a brace, beating several defenders with some nifty dribbling on the left wing and racing towards the box. The sophomore went one-on-one against the keeper and tried to slip a shot under the gloves, but her attempt went wide right.

The Bulldogs started to exploit the Athenas' high press with long passes, and it finally paid off in the 82^nd minute when Lauren Bay managed to get open from the edge of the box. The midfielder cracked a well-placed shot towards the right side of the net to cut the lead in half.

In the 84^th minute, Coach Sanchez brought her seniors back on the field to close out the game and restore Athenas' ball possession. CMS managed to create several chances in the final minutes to pad the lead, but to no avail. Regardless, they managed to hold on to win at the whistle.

The Athenas will host Whittier on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. in hopes of climbing to first place in the SCIAC.
