Laube and Faust put away La Verne in 2-0 win

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The usual suspects got the job done for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team on Wednesday night, as seniors Laynee Laube (CMC) and Katelyn Faust (CMC) each scored a goal to defeat La Verne 2-0. The Athenas (11-5-1, 8-2-1) controlled possession for majority of the game, out-shooting the Leopards (3-12-0, 2-9-0) 19 to 7, while playing tight defense to record their eighth shutout of the season. Junior Morgan McCoy (CMC) only recorded one save as her defenders did a solid job at containing La Verne's attack. La Verne's goalie Hanien Samara had a fairly busy night, collecting six saves within the first half in a valiant effort to keep her team afloat.

The Athenas came out firing all cylinders in the first half, taking 11 shots in the period, seven of which were on target. In the 24th minute, Laube broke free from her line and received a pass at the top of the box. The senior managed to dribble through several defenders and launched an off-balance shot towards the net. Samara managed to get her fingers on the shot, but the ball bounced off the right post and into the net to give CMS the 1-0 lead. This was Laube's eighth goal of the season, and 10th in her career.

The Leopards applied more pressure in the midfield in the second half and held CMS to four shots on goal while taking five shots of their own. In the 56th minute, Cambria Smith almost found the net for La Verne, taking a header off Juna Bouchekara's corner kick, but saw her shot blocked. Kyndall Taylor followed up quickly with another shot on target, but her attempt was blocked as well.

In the 82nd minute, Faust managed to slip past the Leopards defense and scored her seventh goal of the season put the game away.

The Athenas will return home to host Redlands (3-10-1, 2-8-1) on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. A win against the Bulldogs will secure home field advantage for the Athenas in the semifinals of the SCIAC tournament.
