Favakeh drills a hat trick in 6-2 drubbing

ESCONDIDO, Calif. – After taking a tough loss to Pomona-Pitzer, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team (9-5-0, 6-2) bounced back in major fashion with a 6-2 onslaught against Saint Katherine College on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Kira Favakeh (HMC) unleashed a hat trick while junior Margaret Loncki (CMC) scored a brace and senior Laynee Laube (CMC) added one more of her own. Delia Jimenez scored both goals for Saint Katherine.

The team looked sluggish in the opening half, having played the night before, while St. Katherine played with more effort. The home team pounced on CMS first 11 minutes into the game, when Tonya Gonzalez found Jimenez with a well-placed pass on the counter attack to open up the scoresheet. Favakeh responded in spectacular fashion in the 26^th minute, driving a hard shot from 25 yards out to tie the game. However, St. Katherine retook the lead in the 39^th minute after Jimenez capitalized on a miscue from the Athenas' backline to take a 2-1 at the end of the half.

The Athenas showed more urgency in the second half and were in full throttle. Favakeh tied the game at two apiece in the 49^th minute with another brilliant shot from distance and Loncki scored her first goal of the day in the 58^th minute to give CMS the 3-2 lead. The freshman completed the hat trick after tapping in a well-placed cross in the 63^rd minute and Loncki followed up in the 77^th minute with a long shot to make it five for CMS. Laube took the ball to the right side of the box with five minutes left in the game and launched a hard shot past the keeper to put the game far out of reach.

The team will hit the road on Wednesday, Oct. 12 to take on Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m. in hopes of getting back the lead in SCIAC.
