Athenas come up empty on the road

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team (2-3-0) had a rough road trip this past weekend, suffering two close losses to #7 Trinity University (4-0-0) and Hardin-Simmons University (3-1-0). Senior Katelyn Faust (CMC) scored the only goal for CMC in their 2-1 loss to Trinity, while the team was shutout 1-0 in their loss to Hardin-Simmons.

The Trinity Tigers had more control over the game in the first half as the Athenas found themselves defending in their own half. The Tigers had several quality looks at goal, but senior Kelly McConnell (CMC) kept them in the game with four major saves in the half. Unfortunately, Trinity's winger Colleen Markey scored a goal in the 20^th minute after beating her defenders to the ball on an offensive throw-in and slipping a shot past McConnell on a one-on-one attempt.

The Athenas found their rhythm after Trinity's goal, but struggled to frame quality shots at the net. Although CMS showed more control over possession in the second half, their efforts went in haste after sophomore Catherine Leon (CMC) committed a foul outside their box in the 87^th minute and was shown the yellow card. Julia Kelly took the free kick for Trinity, and drilled a shot over the wall of defenders and into the back of the net to double the lead. The Athenas desperately tried to climb back after sophomore Maddie Peterson (SC) and senior Emily Cassell (CMC) combined on an assist to get Faust a goal in the 89^th minute, but it was too late to make a comeback.

Sunday's match against Hardin-Simmons was just as gritty, as the Athenas appeared to play on equal terms. The Cowgirls fired early with a quick goal, as Kami Jones took the lead in the first minute. The game was similar to the loss against Trinity, as the Athenas struggled to retain possession in the opening half but found their rhythm after 30 minutes of play. The Athenas controlled the run of play in the second half, outshooting the Cowgirls 8 to 2, but struggled to capitalize on their chances until the final whistle. Senior Laynee Laube (CMC) led the team with five shots.

The women's soccer team will look to bounce back as they host their conference rival, Pomona-Pitzer, on Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m.
