Double OT tie at Whittier locks in No. 2 seed for CMS in SCIAC Tourney

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team entered the regular season finale at Whittier needing a win or a tie to lock up the No. 2 seed and a first round home match in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. CMS and Whittier went the full 110 minutes on Oct. 31 and the match ended scoreless. With the tie, CMS is the second seed in the upcoming SCIAC Tournament and hosts Cal Lutheran in the first round on Thursday, Nov. 5.

CMS came out firing in the match, attempting five shots in the first 15 minutes, one of which was on goal and was saved by Whittier goalie Alexi Cruz. CMS outshot Whittier 6-3 in the first half but the tide turned in the second half and first overtime with Whittier outshooting CMS 9-4 during that period.

In the second overtime, CMS had two corner kicks but could not convert those opportunities into the game-winning score. Junior goalie Kelly McConnell (HMC) earned the shutout and had five saves in the process. Senior forward Darrah Shields (CMC) and junior forward Katelyn Faust (CMC) each attempted three shots in the match with one shot on goal.
