Late goal gives Athenas fourth straight win

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team came back from an early deficit to pull out a 3-2 win over the visiting UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs.

UCSC controlled the flow early and jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Midfielder Alex Arce had a shot bounce off the post at the 10 minute mark and attempted another shot shortly thereafter that found its way to Megan Carey in front of the goal. Carey tipped the ball past sophomore Morgan McCoy (CMC) for a 1 goal advantage.

Three minutes later, forward Emily Vanasse took a low, soft shot from well outside the box that surprised a well-positioned McCoy, who mishandled the attempt and let it squeak between her legs giving the Banana Slugs a quick 2-0 cushion.

In the 24th minute freshman Maddie Peterson (SCR) made a great individual effort for the Athenas, using her speed to drive to the net through the UCSC defense but ripped her shot attempt off the far post.

Looking for an answer to the early deficit, sophomore midfielder Ellen Berkley (CMC) took a feed from Sydney Flynn (CMC) in the 33rd minute and Berkley, from about 10 feet out, kept her shot on the ground and beat a diving goalkeeper to put CMS on the board.

With the second half underway, senior forward Darrah Shields (CMC) was set up with a free kick just outside the box, in a similar position to where she scored against Chapman. Shields hooked the ball to the high right side but couldn't put it behind second half goalkeeper Selina Davila-Olivera who made the jumping save.

Shields had a chance at a corner kick in the 66th minute and placed it in the goal-crease to senior Kelsey Heflin (CMC) who sent an air ball over to freshman Remi Edwards (CMC), and Edwards headed the ball over Davila-Olivera to tie the match.

With a potential overtime looming, the Athenas goal scoring leader Katelyn Faust (CMC) broke away from the UCSC defense in deep and received a nice pass from Shields. Faust fired a low shot that found its way past the challenging Davila-Olivera and the CMS bench erupted, as the late goal put the Athenas ahead 3-2 in the match with just over five minutes to play.

The Banana Slugs would not get any opportunities to tie the game as CMS controlled possession for a majority of the remaining time, sealing the come-from-behind victory.

Second half goalkeeper Kelly McConnell (HMC) earned her seventh win of the season improving her overall record to 7-3-3.

It is the fourth straight win for the CMS women's soccer team and is the first time this season they have scored more than two goals in a match.

The 7-4-3, (4-2-2) Athenas remain in second place in the SCIAC conference, with a number one versus number two showdown coming up on Oct. 14 in a sixth street rivalry battle with huge implications at Pomona-Pitzer.
