Overtime game winner by Lo beats Willamette

CLAREMONT, Calif. – On a hot Sunday afternoon, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team pulled out its first overtime victory of the season, 1-0 over Willamette University. Freshman Megan Lo (CMC) was able to finish on just her second shot of the day for her first collegiate goal.

The Athenas out-shot the Bearcats in each period for a total of 26 in the match, compared Willamette's 12.

In the first half, CMS controlled the pace of the game but were unable to connect passes and find feet with the consistency desired. Juniors Katelyn Faust (CMC) and Laynee Laube (CMC) each had shots that ricocheted off the posts in the first few minutes. Each goalie made four saves, staving off the opposing offense.

The second half was primarily played in Willamette's half as the Athenas relentlessly attacked. During the half, CMS took 10 shots but had many more opportunities than that. Laube was a menace all over the field – coming back to help on defense, making runs up the left side and taking corner kicks for the Athenas.

As the clock ticked down in the first overtime, the Bearcat defense became more aggressive, causing fouls which resulted in free kicks for CMS. Faust hit one just wide of the upper left corner. Finally, in the 106th minute, Lo dribbled in on her own and buried the ball in the net for the win.

Ultimately sophomore defenders Wren Osler (SCR) and Jacey Coniff (HMC) played all 106 minutes in the heat and were largely responsible for the shutout.

For the Bearcats, Kelsey Walker and Veronica Ewars led with three shots each while Emily Sewall made 14 saves in goal.

CMS (2-2-1) next travels to Redlands (1-0-1) on Wednesday night (Sept. 16) for their SCIAC opener.
