First win for Athenas over No. 22 Wash U

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team captured their first win on Sunday over No. 22 Washington University in St. Louis 2-1 under the hot afternoon sun. Junior Katelyn Faust (CMC) scored both goals for CMS.

The Athenas struck early in the game, as junior Darrah Shields (CMC) connected with classmates Kelsey Heflin (CMC) and Faust to get CMS on the board in the ninth minute. Shields passed the ball into the crowded box to Heflin and Faust was able to tap it in for the quick goal.

Faust added another goal to her stat line just three minutes into the second half to give the Athenas a 2-0 lead.

The Athenas' defense held the Bears scoreless through 74 minutes of play. Heflin, and sophomore Jacey Coniff (HMC) captained the back line, continually shutting down Washington University's offensive attacks. Ultimately, a foul was called in the box and Sam Ezratty scored the penalty kick goal for the Bears.

CMS utilized two keepers this afternoon with junior Kelly McConnell (HMC) starting and sophomore Morgan McCoy (CMC) finishing out the final 13 minutes of the game. Each goalie recorded two saves and effectively managed the defense in front of them, especially at the end of the game when Wash U. had two shots and a corner kick opportunity in attempts to tie the game.

CMS (1-1-1) next faces Westmont (2-1-0) on Sept. 12 and then returns home on Sept. 13 to match up with Willamette (0-1-1) from the Northwest Conference.
