No goals for either side as Athenas tie Smith College

CLAREMONT, Calif. – For the second straight game, the Athenas entered overtime in a 0-0 stalemate. This time around no one would score as the match ended in a draw, but was a contest that was anything but even when it came to possession and scoring chances.

From the initial kick-off CMS controlled the tempo, something that wouldn't change for the entire 110-minute match. The Athenas totaled 35 shots while holding the Pioneers to just two, giving both CMS goalkeepers a quiet night on the back-end as neither Smith shot reached the goal box.

Junior Katelyn Faust (CMC) made things exciting early for CMS as she had four shots in the first four minutes, including one off the post and one crossbar. After ending the night with 10 shooting attempts she now has 13 shots through the first two matches, nearly double that of any other Athena.

CMS kept the pressure on through the entire first half, totaling 13 shots and four corner kicks. The second half was much of the same, with CMS bombarding Smith with 16 shots (4 on goal) and adding another 6 corner attempts.

Defensively, the Athenas were up to the task of shutting down the Pioneers offense, not allowing the ball to get anywhere near goalkeepers Kelly McConnell (CMC) or Morgan McCoy (CMC) the entire night.

Nothing would change when the game entered overtime as the Athenas were playing down in the Pioneers end nearly the entire time. CMS would add 8 more shots through the two sudden-death periods, however only one reached Smith goalkeeper Shelley Hall and she made the only save of OT to the game scoreless.

Hall had a strong night in goal for the Pioneers amassing nine saves, but did get a lot of help from the cage as the Athenas hit two posts and two crossbars.

Overall, it was a strong performance by CMS, something they can certainly build off in their next game at home against Washington (Mo.) on Sept.6. From there, the Athenas travel to Westmont (Calif.) to take on the Warriors Sept.23 before returning home the next day for a match with Willamette. After being held scoreless through their first two games, the Athenas hold a 0-1-1 record going into their next match.
