Home opener goes to San Diego Christian in OT

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In an exciting start to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team's season, the Athenas lost to San Diego Christian 1-0 in overtime. On the eve of the first day of classes, the stands at Pritzlaff field were packed for the Athenas' home opener.

CMS forced a high tempo game initially as juniors Laynee Laube (CMC) and Katelyn Faust (CMC) made runs and took the first few shots for the Athenas. The goalkeeper for the Hawks, Katherine Koury made all five of her saves in the first half.

All of the CMS rookies saw the field in the early season non-conference matchup tonight. Of the reserves, freshman Remi Edwards (CMC) led the way, recording two shots. Junior Kelly McConnell (HMC) and sophomore Morgan McCoy (CMC) split time in goal but neither had save opportunities as the majority of SDC's shots were high or off frame.

With the game tied 0-0 after regulation, overtime ensued. Over the course of the game, CMS had more corner kick opportunities but the Hawks were able to convert on one of theirs just two minutes into the extra period. Allie Leon took the kick and Allie Hill knocked it in for a goal to break the tie.

The Athenas (0-1-0) face Smith (1-0-0) on Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. and then Washington University on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 3 p.m., both at home.
