Five Athenas named All-SCIAC, Sanchez is Coach of the Year

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After a regular season title and a 10-4 SCIAC record, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps landed five Athenas on the all-conference first and second teams in addition to head Coach Keri Sanchez named as Coach of the Year.

The Athenas recognized were: senior defender Samantha Kunz, sophomore midfielder Makella Brems, junior midfielder Darrah Shields and senior forward Isabel Lester on the first team with senior defender Sara Tweedy on the second team.

Kunz finishes here collegiate career with her second consecutive All-SCIAC award after starting in all 21 of the Athenas' games. Her poise under pressure anchored the defense. CMS only allowed 19 goals on the season, 15 in the 14 games of SCIAC play. Kunz's only goal this year was a game-winner in overtime against La Verne that was also featured on SportsCenter Neighborhood Top Plays.

Brems led the Athenas and SCIAC in goals scored with eight on the season, four of which were game-winners. Additionally, Brems had three assists, the second highest on the team.

Shields was one goal shy of Brems on the season with seven, but led the team in assists, most of which were in service of Brems.  The duo of Shields and Brems led the Athenas to score 37 goals this year, the most prolific the team has been since 2011 when they scored 38.

Lester caps off her career with her first All-SCIAC award. Another player who started all 21 games, Lester scored three goals and had two assists.

Tweedy returned for her fourth year after a knee injury keeping her out of the 2013 season and earned a second All-SCIAC award, the first in 2012. Tweedy held down the defense with Kunz but occasionally played up top to shoot. On senior day this year, Tweedy scored the game-winner for a 2-0 shutout of Redlands.

In her 11th year at the helm, Coach Sanchez led the Athenas to a third SCIAC Championship with the best conference record since 2009. Sanchez's competitive fire and quest for maximizing her players' talents earned her the well-deserved honor of SCIAC Coach of the Year.
