Top-seeded CMS taken down by Redlands in SCIAC semi-final

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In a semi-final game of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) women's soccer tournament, Redlands beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1-0. After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs broke the tie with a goal in the 68th minute. Redlands advances to the SCIAC Tournament final to face Cal Lutheran on Saturday, Nov. 8.

The Bulldogs had their first good opportunity in the 25th minute when Cassie Lively fired a shot off the crossbar. In the half, Savannah Laursen led her team, taking three shots.

For CMS, junior Darrah Shields applied early the pressure with a shot in the sixth minute necessitating a save by junior goal keeper Lexi Felix.

Athena goalie senior Molly Freed came up with an excellent save on a shot by Laursen but was unable to control the ball. Redlands' Lihini Weerasinghe, who had substituted into the game just four minutes prior, knocked it past Freed for the only score of the game.

Redlands maintained possession and their composure as CMS continued to attack. The Athenas were unable to come up with the equalizer during the physical second half and the Bulldogs secured the 1-0 win.

Sophomore Makella Brems for CMS had a game-high five shots and Redlands' Laursen totaled four during the match.

In their first SCIAC tournament final appearance since 2010, Redlands (11-6-2) next play Cal Lutheran (13-5-3) who beat Pomona-Pitzer 2-1 in the other SCIAC Tournament semi-final.

The Athenas (13-7-1) recently dropped out of the NCAA Regional Rankings but might possibly have an opportunity for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Watch the selection show at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 10 here.
