Seniors lead in 2-0 victory over Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. – On Senior Day for eight Athenas, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team beat Redlands 2-0 to secure a spot in the SCIAC post-season tournament.

The seniors recognized were: Gabriela Ozer, Molly Freed, Isabel Lester, Samantha Kunz, Ashley Barnhill, Claire Shum, Elizabeth Augustine and Sara Tweedy. The current senior class has a 41-29-9 record over the last four seasons and one SCIAC tournament championship in 2013.

CMS displayed their dominance early in the game with a goal in the seventh minute. Tweedy scored her second, this season and in her career, goal to put the Athenas on the scoreboard. Ozer had the assist, only the second in her career.

The Athenas went into halftime leading 1-0 despite being outshot by the Bulldogs 9-6.

Late in the game, CMS added to their lead with a goal by Ozer. Sophomore Katelyn Faust fired a shot off the crossbar to Ozer's waiting feet. This was only Ozer's second career goal as well, building on one during the 2013 season.

With only two games remaining, the Athenas, currently the No. 1 seed in SCIAC, are guaranteed a spot in the top four teams in conference that will advance to the post-season tournament beginning on Nov. 5.

CMS  (12-5-1, 9-3 SCIAC) next plays Chapman (7-8-2, 3-7-2 SCIAC) at 7 p.m. on Pritzlaff Field on Wednesday, Oct. 29 and then travels across the street to play at Pomona-Pitzer (8-5-4, 6-2-4 SCIAC) next Saturday, Nov. 1 before playoffs begin.
