Athenas shut out Poets in Wednesday night win

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team took the lead in the 20th minute and never relinquished it. CMS scored early and often for the 5-0 victory over Whittier College on Wednesday evening on Pritzlaff Field. Junior Darrah Shields scored twice in the shutout.

The Athenas capitalized on free kick opportunities throughout the game. Two of CMS' goals were from corner kicks in the second half. Senior Isabel Lester took both kicks from the left corner, delivering it precisely to her teammates. Shields scored the first goal of the second half with a header from Lester's serve from the corner. For the fifth and final of the Athenas' goals, sophomore Katelyn Faust passed to senior Sara Tweedy who buried it in the net for her first goal of the season.

In addition to the assist on Tweedy's goal, Faust scored on herself in the 37th minute. Of the 21 shots taken by her team, Faust had six, one of which missed high by only an inch.

The Athenas had a free kick opportunity in the first half that Shields knocked in for a goal after a beautiful ball from Samantha Kunz.

Senior Ashley Barnhill, who was assisted by sophomore Makella Brems scored the goal that started it all in the 20th minute.

The Athenas outshot the Poets 21-3. CMS also used every available field player for a well-deserved team win.

CMS (10-4-1, 7-2 SCIAC) next hosts La Verne (5-7-1, 3-5-1) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 on Pritzlaff Field.
