(Watch Game Highlights)

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team definitively beat Pomona-Pitzer 3-0 in their first meeting of the season on Wednesday night under a full moon at Pritzlaff Field. The Athenas took an early lead and with bolstered confidence, controlled the tempo of the game to come away with a well-earned win.

During the entirety of last year's season, the Athenas scored 15 goals against conference opponents in 14 games. So far this year CMS already has 19 goals in just half of their SCIAC season. Not only are the Athenas scoring more goals but a higher percentage of their shots are on goal are finding the back of the net: .345 this year compared to .233 last year.

In tonight's game, sophomore Makella Brems attacked first. Brems received a pass from senior Elizabeth Augustine to put her in a one-on-one with Pomona-Pitzer's keeper Annie Wedel. With the score, Brems leads the team with seven goals thus far in the season.

CMS kept the pressure on and scored again seven minutes later. This time, it was off the boot of freshman Sydney Smith. Smith is second on the team with four goals on the season, this one assisted by Brems.

In the first half, CMS took eight shots, five of which were on goal requiring Wedel to make three saves, limiting the Athenas' scoring.

With a 2-0 cushion going into the second half, CMS maintained composure and sought to control the ball, always pushing the pace of the game.

In more games than not, junior Darrah Shields has either an assist or a goal. Tonight, she knocked in the Athenas' third goal, assisted by Smith.

CMS goal keeper senior Molly Freed only had two opportunities for saves during the game before stepping out and allowing freshman Morgan McCoy to close out the last 36 minutes of the game.

With the win, CMS takes first place in the SCIAC standings and drops Pomona-Pitzer to second.

The Athenas (9-3-1, 6-1 SCIAC) look to improve on their two game winning streak this weekend against Cal Lutheran (6-4-1, 4-2-1 SCIAC) on Saturday, Oct. 11 out in Thousand Oaks before returning home to play Whittier (1-10-1, 0-7 SCIAC) next Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
