Athenas controlled game to defeat Oxy 2-1

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Since they began competition against conference opponents, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team is on a three game winning streak and undefeated in SCIAC after tonight's 2-1 win over Occidental. The Athenas better their record to 6-2-1 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC.

In the first half, CMS pushed the pace of the game and put the Tigers on their heels. Sophomore Darrah Shields, who leads the teams in assists, scored her first goal of the season for the Athenas in the 20th minute. Of her four shots in the game, three were on frame and she was able to convert one into a goal.

Sophomore Makella Brems was the Athenas' other standout performer on the night. Brems demonstrated her confidence and was masterful with her touches. She now leads the team in goals scored for the year with three after she put one in late in the first half.

The Athenas led 2-0 at half time and up until the 81st minute of play. A shot deflected off CMS's keeper into the goal to put the Tigers on the board.

In goal, senior Molly Freed had four saves on the night while freshman Morgan McCoy added one as well.

Despite her team not taking many shots during the second half, head coach Keri Sanchez felt "we controlled the pace of the game well." After Oxy's goal, CMS buckled down in the last ten minutes to secure the win.

Tomorrow, both the Athenas and Stags host their annual Alumni Games on Pritzlaff and Parents Fields.

Next week, the Athenas (6-2-1, 3-0) travel to Redlands (4-3, 2-2) and Chapman (6-3, 2-2) on Oct. 1 and 4, both games at 7 p.m.
