Athenas score early and often to beat Cal Lu 4-1

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team almost doubled their goal production on the season in Wednesday night's 4-1 win over Cal Lutheran. Freshman forward Sydney Smith scored twice for the Athenas.

Elizabeth Augustine scored first in the 11th minute to put the Athenas on the board. Darrah Shields had the assist, passing it into Augustine from the left side of the goal box.

CMS had another excellent opportunity in the 26th minute as Katelyn Faust and Shields worked together down the field giving Faust a crack at a lefty shot that was saved by the Regals' keeper, Coral Hasley.

Smith substituted in for the Athenas with 12 minutes remaining in the half and got right to work. Smith scored the second goal for CMS and her first of the night just six minutes later, aided by a beautiful serve from Samantha Kunz. The Athenas maintained the 2-0 lead into halftime.

CMS began the second half with the same intensity they ended the first. Shields had a shot that found the net but it was called back due to being offside in the 50th minute.

Smith struck again in the 60th minute, assisted by Shields to give the Athenas the 3-0 advantage.

Goal keeper Molly Freed had three saves on the night but one was most notable. Freed came out to meet an oncoming Regal and made a sliding stop to deflect a hard shot late in the game. Freed was replaced by freshman Morgan McCoy who finished out the final 22 minutes.

The Regals notched a goal for themselves in the 80th minute: Katelyn Kimball scoring and Sarah Wardle on the assist.

In a matter of seconds after Cal Lu's score, CMS put the fourth goal in the cage on the night. After not playing in the first half, Ellen Berkley seemed to be everywhere on the field. Berkley knocked in her first collegiate goal in the 81st minute to push the score to 4-1 where it remained for the last four minutes of the game.

The Athenas (4-2-1) host travel to Whittier to take on the Poets this Saturday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
