CMS Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Whittier 21-3

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team outscored Whittier 6-1 in the second quarter and 8-0 in the third as it broke the game open and captured a 21-3 win over the Poets on Wednesday evening at Whittier Stadium.

With the win, the Athenas move to 7-3 on the year, including 5-1 in SCIAC. Whittier slips to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in league play with the loss.

Olivia Carey had three goals and four assists and Rachel Leonardi tallied a team-high four goals to lead the CMS offense on the day, while Abby Parrish and Tessa Guerra each had hat tricks. Kendell Chapko had four saves in the first half to get the win in goal, while Holly Shankle had two in the second half. 

The Athenas led just 3-1 after the first quarter after Catherine Murphy scored one goal and Carey scored two to make it a 3-0 game early. However, CMS rattled off six goals in a row to push the lead to 9-1 before the Poets managed to score with just three seconds left in the half to make it a 9-2 game at the break.

Alex Futterman started the second-quarter run with a goal and then fed Parrish for another goal seven seconds later off the draw control. Leonardi and Carey scored the next two goals, and Guerra added back-to-back goals 18 seconds apart to cap off the 6-0 run.

Leonardi scored seven seconds into the second half to start a 9-0 run that stretched into the fourth. Alicia Lamkin, Emme McMullen, Taylor Daetz and Bella Lynch all scored their first goals of the game in the third as well. Macie Gruver added the first goal of the fourth to make it a 9-0 run before Whittier finally broke the second-half ice. Parrish scored two goals and Guerra added one to finish off the scoring.  

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it takes on Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m. at Zinda Field, with a chance to even the season series with the Sagehens and avenge their only conference loss.
