CMS Women's Lacrosse Concludes Spring Break Trip With Loss to No. 10 TCNJ
TRENTON, N.J. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team hung in early in a tough road battle against tenth-ranked College of New Jersey, but the Lions eventually found their stride and pulled away for a 24-5 win on Friday afternoon.
The loss drops CMS to 5-3 on the season, with two of the losses coming to top-15 teams, along with No. 15 Wesleyan on Wednesday. TCNJ remains undefeated at 6-0 with the win.
CMS started strong, as Macie Gruver opened the scoring 53 seconds in off a feed from Alex Futterman. After the Lions tied it, Olivia Carey put the Athenas back in front at 2-1.
TCNJ's Ally Tobler then rattled off three goals in a row, and Larissa Hatzold added another to put the Lions ahead 5-2. Bella Lynch responded with a goal for CMS to cut it to 5-3, and after Hatzold scored, Carey scored her second, off another feed from Futterman, to make the score 6-4 with 2:24 to go in the first.
From there, though, the Lions were able to seize momentum and pull away. Jennifer LaRocca closed out the first quarter with two goals to make it 8-4, and Veronika O'Donnell stared the second quarter with two off of LaRocca assists to make it 10-4. Abby Parrish scored off a Gruver feed to make it 11-5 with 10:23 to go in the half, but TNCJ shut out the Athenas the rest of the way.
CMS will get two weeks off before returning to action with a home game against Colorado College on Sunday. April 3.
