Futterman Scores Seven as CMS Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Occidental 22-8

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Senior Alex Futterman scored a career-high seven goals and Rachel Leonardi and Bella Lynch each had four as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team cruised to a 22-8 road win over Occidental on Wednesday evening at Jack Kemp Stadium.

With the win, CMS improves to 2-1 on the year after dominating an Occidental team it defeated by only one goal in 2020 before the shutdown occurred. The Tigers start their season off 0-1 with the loss.

Futterman surpassed her previous career high of five goals, which she set in her collegiate debut as a first-year in 2019 against Whittier. She scored her seven goals on only nine shots, scoring the first two goals of the contest in the opening 2:17 to stake CMS to an early 2-0 lead. After Lynch scored her first, Futterman scored at the 9:36 mark of the first quarter to get a hat trick in the game's opening 5:24.

Occidental momentarily got back in it with the game's next three goals to pull back within 4-3. The comeback was short-lived, though, as CMS went on a 4-0 run, and then after Occidental scored the final goal of the first quarter, CMS outscored the Tigers 7-0 in the second quarter to take a commanding 15-4 lead in the break.

The 4-0 run saw CMS have four different goal scorers not named Futterman, as Lynch, Guerra, Macie Gruver and Leonardi scored in succession. After Occidental scored to make it 8-4 at the end of the first, Leonardi scored three more times in the second, Futterman added two, and Olivia Carey and Catherine Murphy each had one.

In the second half, Futterman, Lynch and Tessa Guerra each scored twice, while Audrey Hope Donahue added one. Gruver led CMS with three ground balls, while Taylor Daetz and Emme McMullen led the way with two caused turnovers. Kendall Chapko went the distance in goal and had seven saves.

The Athenas will be back in action on Saturday for their home opener, when they take on Redlands at 1 p.m. at Zinda Field.
