CMS Women's Lacrosse Rides Goal-Scoring Explosion to Season's First Win

ORANGE, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team bounced back from an opening-day defeat on Wednesday with an offensive clinic, defeating Chapman 20-11 on Saturday afternoon.

Bella Lynch had four goals, Olivia Carey had three goals and two assists and Abby Parrish added three goals and an assist for the Athenas, who improve to 1-1 on the year with the win. Chapman slips to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in league play. 

CMS jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter of play to quickly take command. Alex Futterman and Macie Gruver each had two goals in the first, including the first two goals four seconds apart, after Futterman scored off an assist from Carey and Gruver scored off the ensuing draw control. Taylor Daetz capped off the first with a goal off an assist from Parrish to make it 6-1. 

Lynch then had all three CMS goals in the second quarter to help the Athenas take a 9-4 lead into the half. Carey started the second half with two quick goals to make it 11-4, and Rachel Leonardi had two straight goals to push the lead to 13-5. 

Natalie Teare capped off the third quarter with a goal to make it 16-7 Athenas, and Parrish rattled off three in a row to start the fourth and put CMS ahead 19-8. Catherine Murphy capped off the scoring for CMS with a goal with 5:56 left before Chapman scored the final two of the game. 

Parrish, Gruver, Maisy Mills and Lynch all tied for team-high honors with three ground balls apiece, while Daetz had a team-best three caused turnovers.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Occidental before its home opener on Saturday against Redlands.
