CMS Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener at Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Olivia Carey and Rachel Leonardi each had two goals in their collegiate debuts, but the Pomona-Pitzer women's lacrosse team jumped out to a big early lead and captured a 15-7 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday.

Maggie Griffis, Tessa Guerra and Macie Gruver each had a goal as well for CMS, while Holly Shankle played the second half in goal and had six saves, while allowing only four goals. Sydney Landauer had five goals and two assists for Pomona-Pitzer and Shoshi Hnederson had two goals and six assists. 

Maggie Sweeney had two of her four goals in the first quarter, as Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes. Griffis broke the ice with 13:03 left in the second to make it 7-1, and Guerra answered a Pomona-Pitzer goal to pull CMS within 8-2, but the Sagehens scored the next five goals to move ahead 13-2 early in the third. 

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Chapman for an 11:30 a.m. contest. The Athenas then play another road game at Occidental next week, before their home opener against Redlands on Saturday, March 5 at 1 p.m.
