CMS Women's Lacrosse Pulls Away for 16-5 Road Win over Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. - Sophomore Sammie Cohen (five goals) and senior Sascha Reynolds (three goals) each had their career highs in scoring as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team captured a 16-5 road win over Redlands on Saturday evening at Farquhar Field.

With the win, CMS improves to 4-1 on the season, all in league contests, including three straight wins since seeing its 37-game conference winning streak snapped. Redlands slips to 2-5 on the season, also all SCIAC contests. 

The Athenas never trailed, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before Redlands found the net for the first time. First-year Macie Gruver scored the first goal just 38 seconds in off a pass from senior Allie Hill, and fellow first-year Katelyn Sparks made it 2-0 on a feed from senior Zoe Ryan. 

Junior Sally Abel then scored two in a row, the second off a Gruber feed, just 26 seconds apart to make it a 4-0 lead with 18:27 left in the first half. Erika Lopez broke the ice for Redlands, but sophomore Alex Futterman and Sammie Cohen both scored off feeds from Emily Cohen to stretch the lead to 6-1. 

With just seven seconds left in the half, Emma Johnson scored off a feed from Gruver to give CMS a lift going into intermission, and Reynolds began the second half with two straight goals, the first playing a man down due to a yellow card. After Sammie Cohen scored her second, Reynolds completed her first career hat trick with 15:16 left off a Hill feed to put CMS ahead 11-2. 

Redlands was able to get back to within 12-5, but the Athenas closed on a 4-0 run over the final 3:28, with Sammie Cohen scoring three of them, around the second goal from Sparks, to close out the scoring. 

Hill had a team-high three assists for the Athenas, while Abel and sophomore defender Maisy Mills had three ground balls apiece. Sara Reid played the first half and had three saves, while Anna Gillespie played the second half and had eight saves. 

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night at home when it closes out the first half of the SCIAC schedule with a home game against Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m. (the game with Kean University originally scheduled for Monday night has been canceled).
