CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team secured the outright regular season SCIAC title and the right to host the conference tournament with a dominant 16-8 win over Occidental on Wednesday evening at Zinda Field.

With the win, the Athenas move to 13-2 on the season and 9-0 in SCIAC, while stretching their win streak against conference opponents to 33 games, dating back to the 2016 SCIAC Semifinals. Occidental, which came into the day tied for second in the SCIAC, falls to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in league play. 

Senior attack Corie Hack finished with six goals on the day, giving her 197 in her career, just three shy of becoming only the third player in program history to score 200 goals in a career. Four other players added two goals apiece for CMS, with sophomore midfielder Sally Abel registering two goals and an assist, and freshman Alex Futterman, sophomore Eloise Shields and freshman Tessa Guerra each scoring twice. 

CMS had started slowly in its last two conference wins, leading Redlands just 7-6 at the half before going on to win 18-9, and trailing Chapman 4-2 midway through the first half before pulling away for a 20-12 victory. This time, the Athenas took control early, roaring out to a 7-1 lead with 11:49 left in the half, and building it up to as many as 11 in the second half, before Occidental scored the final three goals to make it a 16-8 game at the final horn. 

 Futterman and Guerra scored the first two goals of the game in the opening 4:11, before Occidental answered back just over a minute later to close to within 2-1. The Athenas then scored five goals in a row to take control, with Hack and Futterman scoring 49 seconds apart to make it a 4-1 game with 23:26 left in the half. Neither team scored for almost 10 minutes, before Hack broke the ice with her second with 13:55 left in the half, which was followed quickly by goals from Abel and Guerra at 12:38 and 11:49, respectively.

Occidental's Marie Whitmore ended the 5-0 run with 10:31 left, but senior Maddie Geary answered back, and Hack finished off the half with a hat trick with 3:27 left to make it a 9-2 CMS lead going into the break. 

The Athenas carried the momentum over in tho the second half as Abel scored at the 27:42 mark and Hack tallied her fourth with 23:33 left to play. Shields answered a pair of Occidental goals to keep it a nine-goal game, and Hack had back-to-back tallies, the second of which made it a 10-goal lead with 14:20 to go. Junior Emma Johnson scored with 11:32 to go for the final CMS goal, before Occidental scored three times in the final 8:46 to make the final score 16-8. 

CMS finished the game with a 47-23 edge in shots, including 28-7 in the first half. Freshman Emma Goldfield had 10 saves for the Athenas to pick up the win in net, while Neah Bois had 19 saves for the Tigers. Junior Zoe Ryan had four caused turnovers and five draw controls to lead the Athenas in both categories. 

CMS will close out the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Pomona-Pitzer, knowing that it already has the top seed in the SCIAC Tournament (May 1-4) wrapped up. It will also be Senior Day for the five seniors on the Athenas: Hack, Geary, goalie Nicole Greenberg, attack Carly Keeney and defender/midfielder Eryn Rogers.
