CMS Women's Lacrosse Rolls to Second Straight SCIAC Win to Open 2019, Defeats Redlands 18-3

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team stretched its winning streak against SCIAC opponents to 26 games as it captured an 18-3 home win over Redlands on Saturday morning at Parents Field.

CMS starts the 2019 season off at 2-0 after winning 22-7 at Whittier in its opener on Wednesday night. The Athenas, who only lost one regular season game last year (to Division I UC Davis), have not lost a regular season game to a Division III opponent since falling to Tufts early in the 2017 campaign, winning 28 in a row since that loss. 

Sophomore Sally Abel (four goals, one assist) and freshman Alex Futterman (two goals, three assists) led the way for the Athenas with five points apiece. Senior Corie Hack and sophomore Blaire Southmayd also added hat tricks with three goals apiece, and senior Maddie Geary scored twice. 

It took a little while for the Athenas to get rolling, as Sadie Pickering scored on a free position shot for Redlands at the 20:04 mark of the first half to make it a 2-1 game. CMS, though, rattled off the next nine goals to make it an 11-1 game early in the second half, including seven straight to make it a 9-1 lead at halftime. Abel started the run at the 10:22 mark, and Southmayd (17:29) and Geary (16:29) scored exactly a minute apart to stretch the lead to 5-1. 

Futterman had back-to-back assists 24 seconds apart, finding Hack at the 9:18 mark and Southmayd at the 8:54 mark to push the lead to 7-1. Hack finished off her first-half hat trick at 4:41, and junior Emily Cohen scored off a feed from junior Mia Prine to make it 9-1 at the break. 

Futterman and sophomore Julia Mueller scored the first two goals of the second half to make it a 10-goal lead, before Hanna Morford picked up a ground ball after a save from freshman goalie Emma Goldfield to stop the run and make the score 11-2. Futterman restored the 10-goal lead off a feed from junior Allie Hill, before Pickering answered with her second to make it 12-3. 

CMS then slammed the door shut with six straight goals to close out the game, with Geary and Southmayd starting the run with free position shots. Abel scored two in a row before junior Emma Johnson and freshman Tessa Guerra capped off the scoring.  

CMS finished with a 34-13 edge in shots on the day, and a 32-20 edge in ground balls. Goldfield finished with six saves for CMS to get her first collegiate win. Junior Kira Weiss led the defensive effort with five caused turnovers and six ground balls for CMS. 

The Athenas will be back in action when they return home on Wednesday to take on Chapman at their usual home at Zinda Field. That facility was unavailable today while the CMS track and field programs hosted the annual Zinda Relays.
