Athenas Earn Bye, Head to Colorado for Second Round Rematch

NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Bracket

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released Sunday the bracket for the Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament, and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas earned a bye through the First Round of the NCAA Tournament and, for the second year in a row, will oppose the Colorado College Tigers (14-4) in the Second Round on Sunday, May 13.

Sunday's meeting will mark the second meeting between the Athenas and Tigers this season. CMS earned a 14-9 victory over Colorado College on Mar. 18 in Colorado Springs. In the victory, five different Athenas scored multiple goals and Evan Murphy (CMC) dished out a game-high five assists.

This is the Athenas' seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament. It also marks the second-straight appearance in the Tournament after making five-straight from 2007-11.

The Athenas, ranked No. 22 in the most recent IWLCA Top 25 Poll, enter the Tournament with an 18-1 overall record, and a 10-0 mark in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) regular-season. CMS' selection comes by way of an at-large bid. With only six teams in the SCIAC, the conference is not eligible for an Automatic Qualifier, despite CMS claiming the SCIAC Tournament Championship on Saturday. The Athenas cruised through the Tournament with convincing wins over Chapman (17-6) and Pomona-Pitzer (17-5).

Last season the Athenas earned a bye through the First Round, but fell to regional rival Colorado College, 15-12 in Claremont. This season the game will be played at Colorado College with the winner advancing to the Third Round against the winner of Franklin & Marshall vs. Tufts/FDU-Florham.

Game time for Sunday, May 13 is yet to be determined and fans are encouraged to follow cmsathletics.com this week for a full preview of the Second Round game.
