Athenas Dodge Raindrops, Hammer Britons to Start Spring Break

CLAREMONT, Calif. – On a damp and dreary day, the No. 23 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas controlled the visiting Albion Britons from the opening whistle en route to a 17-3 victory on Zinda Field. A total of 11 different Athenas collected goals in the non-conference victory with Hannah Graves (CMC) and Sally Abel (CMC) leading the charge with three tallies apiece.

The Athenas peppered Jenina Villabroza, the Albion goalkeeper, with a consistent flow of shots all afternoon long. In total, CMS took 43 shots in the game, compared to just four from the Britons. CMS put 34 of their shots on frame, scoring 17 goals and having 17 saved by Villabroza.

CMS started the game with four quick goals from Emma Johnson (SC), Corie Hack (CMC), Evan Murphy (CMC), and Sally Abel to take a 4-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest. Albion scored their first goal of the game with a transition tally from Darcy Muns just over six minutes into the game to make it a 4-1 advantage for the Athenas.

CMS steadily built their lead over the next 20 minutes with eight-straight goals. Hannah Graves scored all three of her goals during the stretch and a total of six different Athenas found the back of the net in the 20-minute scoring streak.

Albion's Darcy Muns scored her second goal of the half in the final minute of the opening period to make it a 12-2 CMS lead at the break.

While CMS continued to control play after the half, their scoring pace slowed considerably. Sally Abel scored the first two goals of the second-half off passes from Sally Carlson (CMC) and Emma Johnson to put CMS up 14-2 just over 12 minutes into the period. Carlson connected just over a minute later to bump the Athenas' lead to 15-2.

Jade Barrett found the lone Albion goal of the second-half with 13:36 remaining in the game before Emma Johnson and Emily Cohen each tallied in the final minutes of the game to secure a 17-3 victory for CMS.

The victory improves the Athenas to 5-1 on the season. CMS will next take the field on Monday night when they host the Stevenson Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. for another non-conference contest on Zinda Field.
