CMS' commanding offense seals Sixth Street Rivalry

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Sixth Street Rivalry ended in the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team's favor as the Athenas (11-1, 7-0) defeated Pomona-Pitzer (5-9, 1-6) handily 18-7 on Wednesday night. The Sagehens struggled to contain the home side's attack as CMS played one step ahead with sharp ball movement and speed. Freshman Emily Cohen (CMC) repeated her performance at Redlands, co-leading the team with four goals alongside junior Evan Murphy (CMC). Sophomore Corie Hack (CMC) netted two goals with an assist and freshman Allie Hill (CMC) handed out three assists. Rebecca Long scored on several solo efforts, leading the Sagehens with three goals while her teammate Sallie Marx had one goal and two caused turnovers.

The Athenas opened up the half with a 4-0 run, including an incredible counterattack run by Cohen and a free position goal by Murphy. After Long pulled one back for the Sagehens with 22:36 left in the half, the Athenas broke out on another run. Hill ran through the defense in full speed and scoopped a quick pass to the trailing Hack to give CMS a 5-1 lead. The freshman later assisted senior Cara Cancelmo (CMC) and Cohen as Cohen capped the four-goal rally to extend the lead 8-1. Cancelmo and Murphy scored again within the final 10 minutes to give CMS a comfortable 12-4 lead at the half.

Freshman Emma Johnson (CMC) scored her first home goal during the Athenas' three-goal rally at the start of the second half and followed up with an assist to Hack. The Athenas comfortably held possession through the final stretch and never gave the Sagehens open looks in action. The Sagehens managed to score three straight goals in free position attempts to cut the lead 15-7, but it was too late to generate a comeback with 5:25 left in the game.

CMS will host Whittier College this Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. The Athenas won in their last meeting with the Poets this season by a landslide, 21-0.
