REDLANDS, Calif. – Saturday's rematch against University of Redlands produced similar results as the first meeting as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team sealed a comfortable 13-7 victory. The Athenas (10-1, 6-0) were cool and composed on the offensive side of the ball, dominating possession and limiting turnovers. On the defensive end, the Athenas never allowed the Bulldogs (7-5, 2-4) to relax, pushing them to 32 turnovers. Freshman Emily Cohen (CMC) scored a team-high four goals while her classmate Kira Weiss (CMC) had five ground balls.
The two teams got off to a slow start as neither side was able to find the net in the opening five minutes of the game. The Bulldogs finally got on board with a 24:27 left in the first half after Sadie Pickering found the net after picking up a ground ball off her own missed shot. Cohen responded with a solo effort a minute later, but Dulce Moll took the lead back for Redlands with a free position goal. At 18:23, CMS went on a 4-0 run, including two goals from sophomore Corie Hack (CMC) to control the lead. The Bulldogs took two back, but with 3:41 left, Cohen scored off a free position attempt to give CMS a 6-4 lead at the end of the half.
The Athenas pulled away in the second half, keeping the ball from the Bulldogs and creating open shots at the goal. Sophomore Maddie Geary (CMC) opened up the scoring in the second half off an assist from senior Cara Cancelmo (CMC) to spark a 6-0 run. Senior Zoe Pinczower (CMC) and junior Evan Murphy (CMC) added two goals each during the run as the Athenas never looked back.
CMS will play a rematch against cross-street rival Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. to kick off the four games remaining in the regular season.
