Offense runs rampant as Athenas defeat Linfield

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The cold weather on Monday night did not stop the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team from heating up as the Athenas (7-1, 5-0) won 20-1 over Linfield College (1-6, 0-2). The Athenas outshot the Wildcats 37-1 and nearly doubled them in groundballs 23-12. Fourteen different players scored for the Athenas as sophomore Corie Hack (CMC) and freshman Hannah Graves (CMC) co-led the team with three goals. Freshman Allie Hill (CMC) had a goal with three assists and freshman Juliana Clark (CMC) finished with two goals and three caused turnovers.

The Athenas attacked the net at full throttle, scoring six goals in less than six minutes at the start of the opening half, including two by freshman Emily Cohen (CMC). Hack completed her hat trick with 18:39 left in the half and the Athenas continued to control possession on the offensive half as they held the Wildcats scoreless. Holding onto an 11-0 lead with 9:25 remaining in the half, the Wildcats finally got on board. Graves scored two goals to close the half, including one off a bullet pass from the side by Hill.

Linfield struggled to find the back of the net during the second half as the Athenas did not allow their opponents a single shot. The Athenas' offense continued to dominate possession and sophomore Maddie Geary (CMC) started to orchestrate most of the attack, creating three assists in the second half. After bringing the CMS ahead 18-1 with a pass to junior Kendall Greenberg (CMC), Geary scored on an incredible solo effort after scoring in traffic. With 3:33 remaining in the game, senior Theresa Wechsler (CMC) scored the final goal of the game after receiving a pass from sophomore Carly Keeney (CMC) in front of the net and flicking a one-touch shot at the net. Primarily a defender, it was Wechsler's first career goal as an Athena.

CMS will host Colorado College this Saturday on April 1 at 1 p.m. for its final non-conference game during the regular season.
