Freshmen combine for nine goals in win over Tigers

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The freshmen took the spotlight in Saturday afternoon's game against Occidental College (8-2, 2-2) as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team (7-1, 5-0) defeated the Tigers 16-11. Freshmen Allie Hill (CMC), Emily Cohen (CMC), and Hannah Graves (CMC) were responsible for more than half of the Athenas' goals while their classmate Juliana Clark (CMC) co-led the team with four groundballs alongside sophomore Corie Hack (CMC) and senior Cara Cancelmo (CMC). Junior Lauren Clubb (CMC) distributed a whopping six assists to help the Athenas stay undefeated in conference play.

Hill got started less than a minute into the game, scoring off a pass from junior Evan Murphy (CMC). She scored the next two goals over a two minute span to give CMS a 3-0 lead. She finished the game with a team-high five goals. Sierra Slack responded with a goal off a free position shot and sparked the Tigers to rally back and tie the game. With 21 minutes left in the half, Hill scored her fourth goal of the game thanks to a pass from Clubb. Clubb later scored one for herself, but the Tigers responded halfway through the first half with two goals to tie the game.

Cohen took back the lead with an assisted goal with 9:19 left in the half. On the next drive, Cohen forced a turnover and scooped up the groundball. She combined with Hack to score her second goal of the day, making it 7-5 for the Athenas. After a goal by Hill with less than a minute left, the Athenas struck quickly with five seconds remaining. On a free position attempt, Clubb found sophomore Maddie Geary (CMC) with a quick pass who then found the net to give CMS the 10-6 lead into the break.

The Tigers opened up the second half with two goals, but the Athenas responded with five straight goals over a nine minute period to take a 15-8 lead. Occidental tried to claw back, scoring off a free position attempt with 11:32 left in the game followed by a quick goal right after a draw control. However, the Athenas' defense played tough on the Tigers and burned some clock while Clubb scored with 6:31 left in the game to put an end to Occidental's hopes of a comeback.

The Athenas will return home to Zinda Field on Monday night, March 27, to host Linfield at 7 p.m.
