Tufts hands Athenas first loss of season

MEDFORD, Mass. - The first game of the east coast road trip did not end well for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team (4-1) as Tufts University (2-1) handed the Athenas their first loss of the season 16-8. Fighting against a tougher opponent and snowy weather conditions, the Athenas struggled to find momentum on both ends of the field. Although both teams were fairly similar on ground balls, draw controls, and successful clears, the Jumbos won the possession battle, committing less turnovers (24-19) and fouls (32-25).

Sophomore Corie Hack (CMC) led the CMS with three goals and snatched up three ground balls while junior Evan Murphy (CMC) had two goals, four ground balls, and won five draw controls. Freshman Juliana Clark (SC) put in work on the defensive end, causing a team-high five turnovers. Kate Mackin led the Jumbos with eight goals while her teammate Dakota Adamec scored six. Taylor Meek had four assists for Tufts.

The Jumbos wasted little time to find the net, scoring two goals in less than two minutes into the first half. After Hedy Veith was awarded a yellow card on a hard foul, junior Mikaela Connell (CMC) took advantage of the power play opportunity and found freshman Emily Cohen (CMC) for CMS first goal. However, Tufts went on a 6-0 run, two coming off a free position shot, to build a sizable lead. Hack responded with two goals, while Murphy scored once with 28 seconds left in the half to cut the deficit 10-4.

The Athenas managed to slow down the pace of the game, but they still struggled to go on a significant run. The two teams found themselves trading goals, but a brief 2-0 run from Tufts within the final seven minutes of the game put the Athenas in a hole too great to climb out of.

CMS will play again on Thursday, March 16 at 9 a.m. against Connecticut College in the second game of the east coast trip.
