Poets blanked by Athenas 21-0

WHITTIER, Calif. – For the third SCIAC contest of the 2017 season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team shut out Whittier College 21-0. With the win, CMS improves to 3-0 overall and in conference play.

From the first whistle, it was clear that CMS was the dominant team. Freshman Allie Hill (CMC) and sophomore Corie Hack (CMC) took a trio of shots in the first possession, each saved by Whittier's goalie Madison Topping. Then, junior Evan Murphy (CMC) scored the first goal for CMS at 28:18. Senior Cara Cancelmo (CMC) gave CMS the 2-0 lead within 13 seconds after Hill won the subsequent draw control.

The Athenas had success again with pressure in the middle of the field. Whittier only completed five clears in the first half as CMS forced 17 turnovers. Senior Zoe Pinczower (CMC), freshman Hannah Graves (CMC) and Mia Prine (CMC) each had a pair of caused turnovers in the game.

Offensively, nine different players scored CMS' 11 goals in the first half while the Athenas out-shot Whittier 29-3. By the end of the game, five Athenas had scored two or more goals: Hack, Murphy, Graves, sophomore Maddie Geary (CMC), and junior Ellen Berkley (CMC). Berkley was 4-for-4 converting shots into goals for the Athenas on the night.

In the cage, all three goalies for CMS saw time. Freshman Sara Reid (CMC) earned her third win in as many games while junior Teresa Despres (HMC) and sophomore Nicole Greenberg (SC) split the second half and each made a save to secure the shutout.

Last season, CMS recorded two shutouts, both against non-conference opponents.

Next up for the Athenas will be their biggest test in SCIAC play so far as they host Chapman (2-0, 2-0) on Zinda Field on Saturday, Mar. 4 at 1 p.m.
