Key returnees provide plenty optimism for lacrosse

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team looks forward to making a strong statement in this upcoming season after seeing the silver lining last year. After posting an 8-7 record in the 2015 season, the Athenas improved to 13-4 in 2016 and finished in third in the SCIAC. With the top nine point leaders from last season returning to the Athenas this year, there is plenty of optimism going around that CMS will see continued success thanks to a young and talented core.

Head Coach Lauren Uhr will ensure the team will be battle-tested before they enter the final stretch of conference play this season. After four conference games to start the season, the Athenas head to the east coast for a three-game road trip, facing two teams in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Top-20 national rankings. CMS will open the trip against Connecticut College on Mar. 14 before facing No. 20 Tufts on Mar. 15 and No. 8 Amherst on Mar. 17. CMS hosts Colorado College, who was the No. 1 team in the West Region last season, on Apr. 1.

The Athenas are led by junior Mikaela Connell (CMC) who was on the IWLCA All-West Region Team in 2016. The junior led the Athenas with 45 points, including 28 goals and 17 assists. Sophomore Corie Hack (CMC) will look to follow up on her successful freshman campaign, during which she led the team with 35 goals and 27 caused turnovers. She was named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year as well as earning IWLCA All-West Region Team honors. Draw control expert Cara Cancelmo (CMC) will return to CMS for her senior season to help provide stability in the Athenas' possession game after winning 51 draws and earning All-SCIAC recognition in 2016.

The team will open up its season on Saturday, Feb. 21 at home against Redlands.
