Athenas to host Chapman in SCIAC Tournament Semis

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After a bye in the first round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team will host Chapman in a semifinal on Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m. on Zinda Field.

During the regular season, CMS, Chapman and Pomona-Pitzer all finished with an 8-2 record for a tie of first place. Because the two losses for each team were to another one of the trio, the seeding came down to "goals against" giving Pomona-Pitzer and CMS the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, in the six-team tournament. Standings and the Tournament Homepage can be viewed on the SCIAC site.

With the 15-7 win over No. 6 Whittier last night, Chapman advances to the semifinals to play CMS. Pomona-Pitzer hosts Occidental in the other semifinal at 7 p.m. on April 30.

The game can be followed online via a video broadcast for a $10 fee (per SCIAC regulations) or live stats for free.

The Athenas have gotten the best of Chapman in both meetings this SCIAC season with wins on Feb. 27 (11-10) and Apr. 13 (11-6). In those two games, CMS' leading scorers are freshman Corie Hack (CMC) with five goals followed closely by sophomore Mikaela Connell (CMC) at four. Hack is second in the SCIAC in goals scored at 26.

CMS is riding a four game win streak, all with double-digit scoring. In the two most recent wins, sophomore Katie Hill (CMC) has combined for eight goals while Connell has had seven. In goal, senior Kate Anello (CMC) has the best save percentage of her career at 50.8% and has had three games with over ten saves each.

The Panthers are led by Gretchen Rodenberger at 23 goals in SCIAC play including two last night against Whittier. Stacey Zuppa led Chapman with four goals vs. the Poets and Tara Sonnemaker earned her 14th win on the season in goal.
