Determined Athenas secure No. 2 seed for SCIAC Championships

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Just a couple of weeks ago, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team narrowly defeated Occidental on the road, 11-10. On April 23, in the regular season finale before the SCIAC Championships, CMS took control from the outset en route to a 14-7 win over Occidental at Zinda Field. The win secured CMS the No. 2 seed for the SCIAC Championships and guaranteed CMS a first round bye and a semifinal home game on Saturday, April 30. More details for the SCIAC Championships will be provided as they become available.

Occidental (7-10, 1-9 SCIAC) scored first, just under four minutes into the match on a goal by MacKenzie Wright. Thirty seconds later and a man up, sophomore Lauren Clubb (CMC) knotted the match at 1-1 and started a decisive 5-0 run for the Athenas that spanned over seven minutes. Sophomore midfielder Katie Hill (CMC) scored twice for CMS (13-3, 8-2 SCIAC) during the run and a team-high four times in the match, on only four shot attempts.

Shai Goodman scored for Oxy and made it 5-2 with 9:14 before halftime, but CMS tacked on four more goals and led 9-2 as time expired on the first 30 minutes.

Ahead 11-2, CMS gave up four goals in a row as Occidental brought the score to 11-6 with 14:18 remaining. The CMS defense held Occidental with just one goal in the remaining minutes. CMS forced 25 Occidental turnovers and senior goalie Kate Anello (CMC) turned away nine shots from the opponents.

Seven Athenas scored and five Athenas had two or more goals. Wright scored four times for Occidental.
