Career high saves for Anello on Senior Day in 12-6 loss to Sagehens

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Senior Kate Anello (CMC) was honored pre-game with the rest of the 2016 graduating class and then went on to make a career high of 15 saves. While the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team only trailed by one at halftime, Pomona-Pitzer broke out in the second half with seven goals to take the game 12-6 on the rainy Saturday afternoon.

The other seniors recognized were: Isabel Laterzo (CMC), Alex Savino (CMC), Christina Coffin (CMC), Molly O'Donnell (CMC), and Erin Larsen (CMC).

The Athenas scored first as Mikaela Connell (CMC) snuck it past PP's Gaby Fukumura to take the early 1-0 lead. The Sagehens tied it up before Coffin and junior Zoe Pinczower (CMC) scored back to back goals giving CMS the largest lead of the game at 3-1.

Pomona-Pitzer then fired of three goals in a row, two by Sarah Markowitz, the SCIAC's points and goals leader. Markowitz ended up with three goals and three assists in the game.

With 7:33 on the clock in the first half, sophomore Ellen Berkley (CMC) ended the scoring drought and tied up the game 4-4. PP's Lilly Thomey gave the Sagehens the 5-4 lead going into the half with a goal in the last two minutes.

Anello deftly denied nine shots in the first half as Fukumura only saved two shots from the Athenas.

In the second half, the Sagehens put together two streaks of three and four goals. In the midst of those, Coffin and freshman Corie Hack (CMC) scored a pair, giving life to the CMS offense as the Athenas only trailed 8-6 with 13 minutes remaining.

As time wound down, PP controlled the ball and maintained possession, ultimately to notch the 12-6 win over CMS.

The Athenas (9-3, 4-2) drop to third in SCIAC with Pomona-Pitzer and Chapman sharing the top spot at 5-1.
