Hack gives CMS late win over Colorado College

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Freshman Corie Hack (CMC) scored four goals including the game winner with two seconds remaining to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team to a 12-11 victory over Colorado College.

Hack used a nice spin move near the center of the arc to get around a defender and score to put CMS up 1-0 three minutes in, but Colorado College's Annie DeFrino was able to find the back of the net on consecutive possessions to quickly give the Tigers their first lead.

CMS tied it up on Carly Keeney's (CMC) 12th of the season and the game remained deadlocked until junior Cara Cancelmo (CMC) drove to the cage and took a feed from freshman Gretta Richardson (SCR) off the right side to put the Athenas ahead 3-2.

Richardson and Hack later combined to eventually put the Athenas up 6-3, with Hack completing the hat trick on a free position shot at 8:30.

The offensive output continued for CMS when Cancelmo found a wide open Katie Hill (CMC) near the cage who beat the goalkeeper high for a 7-3 lead. Hill added one more three minutes later as the Athenas led 8-3 at halftime.

The Tigers turned the tide on the Athenas in the early portion of second half. Nikki Blair scored on a free position shot just over one minute in and Mary Taussig and Steph Kelly quickly slashed the Athenas lead to two under two minutes later. DeFino netted her third and fourth goals of the game to tie the game at 8-8.

After the teams traded goals, CMS managed to regain a two goal lead thanks to a free position shot from Hill and sophomore Mikaela Connell's (CMC) first of the game.

Hannah Lyons netted a man-advantage goal a few seconds later for Colorado College, and the 11-10 score held up until the final two minutes when Taussig put one past senior goalkeeper Kate Anello (CMC) to tie the game late.

With less than five seconds remaining, Hack was awarded a free position attempt after being fouled on a last second drive to the cage and found an opening in the top portion of the net to come through clutch for CMS and seal a 12-11 win.

Although the Athenas were outshot 32-20 overall, they converted on 75% of attempts that made it through to the goal.

Hack recorded her third game with four or more goals and Hill earned a hat trick for the second straight game.

DeFrino led all Tiger shooters with four goals and Taussig caused five turnovers for Colorado College.

The 7-2 (3-1 SCIAC) Athenas are riding a three game winning streak and will play their final non-conference game March 20 against Kalamazoo.
