Hack leads Athenas to first win over Redlands since 2011

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Freshman Corie Hack (CMC) scored five of six goals for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team which beat the University of Redlands 6-5, for the first win in five seasons.

Sophomore Mikaela Connell (CMC) was the only other Athena to score and did so four minutes in to give CMS a one goal lead.

CMS appeared to take a two goal lead two minutes later when sophomore Katie Hill (CMC) found the back of the net, but it was eventually called back on an illegal pocket violation.

Redlands immediately tied the game on the ensuing rush, turning what would have been a 2-0 CMS lead into a 1-1 tie. Hack put the Athenas up by one on their next possession with a nice drive to the cage but once again the Bulldogs responded immediately to knot the game up at two. Each team had select chances in the remainder of the first half but no one was able to convert, leading to a 2-2 tie at halftime.

Thirteen minutes in to the second half, Lacey Bjorndal and Hanna Morford put Redlands up by two with goals on back-to-back shots.

Hack took over the game after the Bulldogs' fourth goal with a pair of free position markers including the game-tying goal on a well-placed feed between the legs of the Redlands goalie from the shallow right side.

The next two minutes saw Hack add her fourth and fifth goals of the game to quickly turn a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead.

Despite goalkeeper Kate Anello (CMC) making a big save on Summer Stafford's bid from the left corner of the cage with just over five minutes remaining, Redlands managed to score at 4:40 to pull within one. Anello made her biggest save of the game on the Bulldogs final offensive chance with 30 seconds remaining to seal the 6-5 win for the Athenas.

The victory marks the first time since 2011 the CMS women's lacrosse team has beaten Redlands, dating back to a 19-11 win on May 11 of that year.

Hack's five goals stands the highest single game goal total of any Athena in this young season and brings her season total to 13. Anello had a solid night on the back end, making 11 saves on 16 shots.

Bjorndal recorded three goals on four shots for the Bulldogs and goalkeeper Quinn Egan made five saves in the loss.

CMS (3-1) will next take on Aurora at home on March 8.
