Redlands ushers CMS to early exit from SCIAC Championships

REDLANDS, Calif. – From start to finish, fourth-seeded University of Redlands led as they went on to defeat the No. 5 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team 13-7 in the quarterfinals of the SCIAC Championships at Redlands' Farquhar Field on April 22. The loss ends CMS' season at 8-7 overall, 5-6 in conference play. Redlands advances to the SCIAC semifinals on April 25 at Pomona-Pitzer.

The first four minutes of the contest were scoreless. Redlands put its first score on the board with 25:24 left in the first half on a goal Katy Miele on a free position shot. That goal started a 3-0 run for Redlands over a two-minute span.

Freshman midfielder Katie Hill (CMC) scored the first goal of the evening for CMS at 22:26, assisted by junior midfielder Molly O'Donnell (CMC). Playing a man up, CMS junior attacker Christina Coffin (CMC) tightened the score up as her goal with 21:12 remaining in the first half made it 3-2. Over the final 21 minutes of the half after Coffin's goal, Redlands outscored CMS 4-1 and led 7-3 heading into the final 30 minutes of the match.

Redlands scored the first two goals of the second half and pushed its lead out to as many as seven scores at 12-5 with 13:09 to play. They went on to the 13-7 win for the season sweep over CMS.

Hill scored two of CMS' seven goals on the night, while a total of six players scored for CMS. Freshman goalie Teresa Despres (HMC) tallied seven saves for CMS coming off the bench. Redlands utilized two goalies on the night to stifle CMS. Dulce Moll and Lacey Bjorndal each had a game-high three scores for Redlands.
