Strong second half by Sagehens too much for Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif., – The CMS women's lacrosse team lost to Pomona-Pitzer 11-8 on Wednesday night.  A late second half push by the Sagehens proved to be too much for the Athenas. CMS is now 8-5 overall and 5-4 in SCIAC.

The Athenas started out the game strong as Zoe Pinczower scored inside the first minute of play. The Sagehens responded as Sallie Marx scored two goals to help the Sagehens go on a 4-1 run over the next 26 minutes. With 2:33 left to go in the half Mikaela Connell scored a beautiful goal assisted by Christy Sutherland and just 40 seconds later Ellen Berkley scored on a free position attempt to tie the game at four goals apiece.  It looked like the Athenas were going to go into the half tied until a missed shot inside of 20 seconds led to a Sagehen attack where Sarah Markowitz scored with just 1.2 seconds left to give the Sagehens a 5-4 lead.

In the second period Marx scored inside the first two minutes of play to give the Sagehens a two goal lead.  This time it was the Athenas who responded with a 3-0 run led by Lauren Clubb who scored two goals within 60 seconds of each other to give the Athenas a 7-6 lead. This would be the last lead for the Athenas as they were outscored 5-1 by the Sagehens in the last 20 minutes of the game.

The leading goal scorers for CMS were Club and Connell who both scored two goals. Leading scorers for Pomona-Pitzer were Marx and Markowitz with three goals.

The Athenas are next in action at Chapman on Saturday, April 18 at 7 p.m.
