Senior night all it takes to get Athenas back on track

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team put an emphatic end to their four game losing streak with an impressive 16-5 win over Whittier College. On senior night, where all the seniors started, the Athenas seemed to have new life on the field as they dominated the draw controls and the ground balls throughout the match. The Athenas now move to 5-3 in SCIAC and 8-4 overall, which keeps them tied for second in conference.

In the first half, Mikaela Connell started the Athenas off on the right foot as she scored back to back goals within three minutes of each other.  Katie Hill completed the 3-0 run as she scored within a minute of Connell's second goal.  Meesha Robinson answered for the Poets as she scored half way through the first half.  Connell answered back with a goal of her own and Whittier responded as well with a goal by Angelina Cuevas.  Connell scored her fourth goal of the half just 16 seconds later; however, Whittier responded as Cuevas scored again to cut the CMS lead to 5-3 going into halftime.

In the second half, CMS pulled away as they outscored their opponent 11-2.  The CMS offense was quite balanced in the second half as nine different Athenas scored with Christy Sutherland and Christina Coffin were the only Athenas to score twice in the second half.  Robinson had the only two goals for the Poets in the second half.

The Athenas were led by Connell as she scored four goals, all in the first half, to lead all scorers for the game. Robinson led the Poets in scoring with three goals.

The Athenas are back in action on Wednesday, April 15 against their Sixth Street rival, Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m. on Zinda Field.
