Athenas lose in overtime for first time this season

CLAREMONT, Calif., – The CMS women's lacrosse team lost in overtime to the Redlands Bulldogs 15-13.  This is the third time the Athenas have gone to overtime this season with the Bulldogs giving them their only loss.  The Athenas are now 7-2 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC.

The Bulldogs started the game off aggressively as Stephanie Garrett scored in the first 30 second of play. The Athenas kept their composure and responded as Joanna Heywood scored just over two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.  After finding themselves down 3-2 with 24 minutes left in the first period the Athenas went on a 6-1 run that was started by Christina Coffin and finished by a pair of goals scored by Mikaela Connell that put the Athenas up 8-4.  The Bulldogs came charging back as they outscored the Athenas 4-1 in the last nine minutes of the period including a goal by Ellen Holt in the last 10 seconds.

The Bulldogs struck first in the second period as Dulce Moll scored two goals in the first five minutes to give Redlands their first lead in the game since 23 minute mark in the first period.  Redlands kept the pressure up for most of the second half as the Athenas found themselves down by two goals with just over 15 minutes left to play.  However, the Athenas mounted a late comeback as Tarah Gilbreth scored with 13:48 left on the clock and Coffin scored with just 1:43 left to play in regulation to even the score at 13-13.  Redlands had two shots at goal in the last minute but Kate Anello came up with two big saves to help send the game into overtime.

In overtime the Bulldogs had the Athenas number Lacey Bjondal and Garret both scored in the first half of the six minute overtime to give the Bulldogs the 15-13 win. The leading scorers for the Athenas were Coffin with four goals and Ellen Berkley with three goals. Moll led all scores for the Bulldogs with four goals.

The Athenas are back in action on April 2 at 7 p.m. at Occidental.
