Big first half gives CMS win over Kean University

CLAREMONT, Calif., – The CMS women's lacrosse team used a strong first half to help defeat the Kean University Cougars 17-12.  With this win the Athenas keep their win streak and undefeated season alive at 7-0 while handing the Cougars their second loss of the season.

The Cougars struck first as Maggie Brocklebank scored in the first 75 seconds of the game.  The Athenas did not take long to respond as they went on a 5-0 run that was sparked by Christina Coffin and capped by Ellen Berkley. The Athenas kept the stifling defense and fast paced offense going as they ended the first half ahead 13-3.

In the second half the Athenas were outscored by the Cougars 9-4 with Lauren Clubb scoring twice for the Athenas.  The Cougars scored five goals in the last five minutes with Samantha Gnapp scoring three of those goals, but the late rally for the Cougars was not enough as the Athenas held on to win 17-12.

Once again the offense for the Athenas was well balanced as 10 different players scored.  Coffin and Clubb led all scorers with three goals apiece and Coffin also led the team in assist with two.

The Athenas are back in action on Wednesday as they take on Plymouth St. at 7 p.m. on Zinda Field.
