Draw controls key in Athenas’ victory over Chapman

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The CMS Athenas played an aggressive brand of lacrosse in their 13-9 win over Chapman University on March 4 in SCIAC play. With the win, CMS remains perfect at 5-0 on the season and is in first place in the SCIAC with a 4-0 conference record.

With a fantastic effort on draw controls by Cara Cancelmo (CMC), the team was able to tally 31 shot attempts to Chapman's 12 and controlled possession for most of the game. The Athenas attacking nature also led to Chapman recording 38 fouls (including three yellow cards), to CMS' 17 fouls with no cards. CMS capitalized on the fouls, scoring on 6-9 free position shots.

CMS led by only two goals at halftime but this proved to be the closest Chapman would ever get before finally falling 13-9.

Standouts for the Athenas include Joanna Heywood (CMC), who scored three  goals as well as Molly O'Donnell (CMC), who was two for two on her shots and also tallied one ground ball. Cancelmo led all players with six successful draw attempts and Chapman's Gretchen Rodenberger led all players with four goals.

The Athenas' next game is a home contest March 15 against SUNY New Paltz on Zinda Field at 11:00 A.M.
